Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Union Hall, Virginia. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with facilities located in cities across the United States capable of conducting these examinations. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly requesting hair tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies as well as legal institutions and probation authorities. A crucial advantage of the hair follicle test is its extensive drug use detection timeframe of approximately 90 days, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for assessing very recent drug use within five days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it references only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of drug test outcomes comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This stage verifies that the sample has been correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid examination for substances of misuse. Screening serves as an economical means to dismiss drug usage for most samples, yet a confirmed screen is essential for court admissibility. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation during Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection capabilities.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
