Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in University Heights, Virginia. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct the procedure. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or from the body is usually acceptable. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine testing. These tests are crucial for employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. A significant advantage is its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, using a supervised collection process that's hard to compromise. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a historical record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When sampled close to the scalp, hair analysis can reveal drug and alcohol intake over a period of up to three months. This method is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), provides 100mg, which is the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. In cases where scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent weight of body hair can be gathered. Note that "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any supplementary information absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for signs of drug use. Although screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug consumption for most samples, a positive screening outcome requires subsequent confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples indicating potential positivity during Screening necessitate additional verification.

If Screening suggests probable positivity, the specimen undergoes further preparation for Extraction. In the Extraction stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most complex form of testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are subject to a cleaning process before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and follows the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair analysis can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring greater result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical consumption: Provides insights into drug patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect current usage: Detectable drug levels in hair take about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The Superiority of Hair Testing

Located in University Heights, VA, Accredited Drug Testing showcases why hair follicle testing often surpasses urine tests. Despite being a long-time standard, urine tests fall short in detection scope and reliability. Hair tests, however, accurately reveal drug and alcohol history, offering a comprehensive view of an individual's habits. They triumph in both accuracy and resistance to tampering.

Accuracy and Reliability

In contrast to urine tests, which can be limited by their short detection window, hair follicles retain drug traces much longer, making them highly favored by those in law enforcement and corporate sectors prioritizing trust.

Extended Detection Window

Extensive Detection Period

Those employing hair testing in University Heights, VA, gain insight into substance use over an extended timeframe. Unlike others, hair tests can identify drug patterns for as much as 90 days prior. This provides a broader understanding of one's drug history, enabling employers to make informed decisions on hiring or employee monitoring.

Comprehensive Drug Use Overview

The superior detection window of hair tests allows companies to review an individual’s substance use history more comprehensively. This approach offers a more complete picture of lifestyle choices or compliance with drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
