When you're searching for hair drug testing near me or hair drug testing locations, we provide a simple and convenient process to find a drug and alcohol testing location near you that is certified to provide all of your drug and alcohol testing needs.
Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to around a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and substances. Hair collection is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.
A segment of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the desired amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, and so forth).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry omissions not addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening provides a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be admissible legally. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.
Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, further hair from the initial specimen is extracted and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.
Confirmation of a positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The entirety of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is under scrutiny by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.
