In Wakefield, Virginia, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers across various cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for analysis. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specific substances depending on your requirements.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has soared recently. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts now often use hair tests in place of standard urine tests. This method is preferred by employers strictly enforcing drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. Its advantage lies in a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under strict observation, making it difficult to falsify, although urine tests remain more precise for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drugs. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection span for drugs and alcohol. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Referring to head hair means only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to discard the majority of drug use cases, any positive findings require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples identified as presumptive positives during Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is initially found positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than others (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis among the most challenging.

Positive screening results are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Detection of drugs in hair typically requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests normally cost more than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result Variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
