Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Walkerton, Virginia. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area with testing facilities nationwide available for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be sampled. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other testing needs.

Recently, the demand for hair follicle drug testing has increased. Employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists frequently opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are particularly favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those in probationary status. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended drug detection period, generally up to 90 days, making evasion nearly impossible. However, for recognizing recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting the usage of drugs and alcohol. The fibers of a growing hair strand trap biomarkers, providing a historical record of substance use over an extended period. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to adulterate, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields about 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional screenings, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair implies only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This process includes verifying that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary, rapid check for drug abuse. This cost-effective procedure can rule out drug use for most samples; however, a positive result in the Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. Drugs in this phase are extracted at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology.

Any positive Screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests trace drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a much shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to trace recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Walkerton, VA, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Employers and legal authorities prefer hair tests because they provide a longer detection window for drug use, stretching up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
