Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wallace, Virginia. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol testing, we excel in hair analysis and boast centers Nationwide that administer these tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. Hair assessments cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, drug assessments increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair testing over urine tests. Hair tests aid employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. Hair follicle tests provide longer drug detection windows, typically up to 90 days, gathered through observed methods, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and drugs by enclosing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection timeframe of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum sample size for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additions, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable portion of body hair may be gathered. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This encompasses confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening consists of an initial brisk assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be affirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that exhibit presumptive positive results in Screening do require subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, rendering results more precise.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a span of time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often designated as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wallace, VA, hair follicle testing stands superior to traditional urine testing methods. It offers an extended detection period, capturing substance use spanning months, not available with short-window urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
