Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Warsaw, Virginia. For those requiring drug or alcohol hair tests, our centers, located in all major cities across the nation, offer specialized hair testing services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, though body hair may be used in certain instances. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers rely on these tests for their extended detection period, which can last up to 90 days. It's collected under observation and difficult to manipulate. Still, urine tests remain more accurate within a 5-day window of drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a robust means for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair embodies an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, making tampering somewhat challenging, while also being convenient for shipping.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, totaling roughly 200 strands, equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil, cut near the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We recommend using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may serve as a substitute. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

Handling a drug test result in the laboratory entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial processing within a lab's framework. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not furnished by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, a confirmation is necessary for a court-admissible positive result. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples tested presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Confirming any positive result from Screening is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, surpassing the shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical insights: It offers a timeline of drug use patterns, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
