Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Wilderness, Virginia. Our expertise in hair screenings for drugs and alcohol, coupled with testing facilities nationwide, ensures convenient access to hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or other body parts, for analysis, which can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug tests have surged in popularity in recent years. They are increasingly mandated by employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals, replacing the standard urine tests. Such tests cater to firms enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and individuals under supervision. A key advantage is their extensive detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, minimizing fraudulent sample occurrences. However, when recent usage within 5 days is under scrutiny, urine tests maintain a higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Within the hair strands, biomarkers become embedded, capturing a prolonged record of usage. When hair samples are obtained near the scalp, they offer a detection timeframe extending up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is suggested for measuring the sample weight. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equal quantity of body hair may be collected. The term "head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other varieties (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial stage of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample's correct sealing and transport, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from the electronic chain of custody process.

Screening serves as a preliminary check to identify drugs of abuse. While it's an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive outcome requires confirmation to stand in a legal context. Samples yielding presumptively positive results during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods, like urine or oral fluid, establishing hair drug screening as a particularly challenging approach.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests provide evidence of substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It establishes a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair may be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
