Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wintergreen, Virginia. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with test facilities across every city nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the crown or body. Tests can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing options.

Over recent years, utilizing hair follicle drug testing has become more frequent. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair drug tests instead of the conventional urine samples. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and those on probation often choose hair tests. The significant advantage lies in its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days, collected under supervision and nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain supreme for recent drug use, within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection window of three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send for testing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and completing any additional data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively eliminates drug usage in most samples at a lower cost, any positives must be verified to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptive positives from Screening require secondary validation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive outcomes from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens are washed for Confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair tests track drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Shows usage trends: The test reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs typically become noticeable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests generally incur greater expenses than other testing options.
  • Variable results: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
