Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Yogaville, Virginia. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is adequate for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation often utilize hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with monitored collection making it hard to tamper. However, urine tests remain the best option for identifying drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the head, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial preparation of a sample in the lab's system. This process confirms the sample is intact and correctly transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial, quick evaluation for drug use. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples testing presumptive positive in Screening mandate further confirmation.

If a sample suggests a positive result in Screening, more hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleaned as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Low risk of tampering: It is extremely challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides a usage history: It can display a trend of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing methods.
  • Results fluctuation: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
