Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Gladstone, Virginia. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and offer test centers across all Nationwide cities capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in drug test procedures. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for a hair drug test over a urine test. Hair follicle drug tests appeal to employers with zero-drug tolerance policies, legal entities, and those on probation due to their longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, collected through observed methods, and being nearly impossible to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, it offers approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, comparatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample with around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyzes, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a small scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step in processing a sample within a lab’s framework. This phase ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary evaluation to spot drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively determines drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that yield presumptive positives during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the main specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to carry out.

Confirmation of any screening positive is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It is notably challenging to cheat a hair drug test, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Historical usage data: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing often outpaces traditional urine tests in Gladstone, VA, providing superior detection capabilities and reliability. While urine tests are effective for short-term detection, hair tests offer extended insights, revealing substance use months back. Thus, hair testing offers a continuation of diligence where urine exams conclude.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is a standout feature in Gladstone, VA. Unlike other methods, it provides an overview of substance consumption over an extensive period of up to 90 days. This prolonged detection aids employers by supplying an in-depth view, assisting in making informed decisions about potential and current employees.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
