Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Acme, Washington. When in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this specialty, offering testing locations across all cities Nationwide capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body can be utilized. Hair testing covers substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine analysis. This method suits employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals due to its extended detection time of up to 90 days, observation during collection, and low susceptibility to cheating. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect hair, somewhat difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This encompasses verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this process, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to compromise: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical perspective: It can reveal a trend of substance use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Acme, WA, the benefits are clear. Hair testing surpasses urine tests in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair samples retain drug traces for longer periods.

Unlike urine tests that detect recent drug use, hair follicle testing offers a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. This superior capability is invaluable in contexts demanding precision and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Acme, WA, features an extended detection window, recognizing drug use over an expansive timeframe, up to 90 days. This advantage enables employers to evaluate an individual’s substance history thoroughly.

Such a prolonged detection period provides detailed insights into long-term usage patterns, beyond what standard urine tests can offer within mere days, elevating its significance for employment screenings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Acme, WA, hair follicle testing presents a tamper-resistant method, greatly reducing adulteration risks. This reliability ensures that the results are consistent and unquestionable.

Hair tests are less prone to manipulation compared to urine samples, which can be easily tampered with. This characteristic reinforces the integrity of the testing process, making hair tests a preferred choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
