Authorized Drug Tests offers extensive hair follicle drug assessments in Adelaide, Washington. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Authorized Drug Tests excels in hair assessments, and we have facilities in every city Nationwide equipped to administer a hair evaluation. Your hair must be between 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of your head, or body hair can be used, typically. These tests evaluate for substances, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Over the years, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now mandate these hair screenings instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle exams are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs. The main advantage is a significantly prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, conducted under supervision and very difficult to falsify. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day frame, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is recognized as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair retains a prolonged overview of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use for a period of up to 3 months. Collecting it is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, the desired amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. All other types (facial, axillary, etc.) are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This step entails confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and processing any additional data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening conducts an initial broad scan for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient strategy to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive results from Screening need confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that are initially positive require additional verification.

For samples that test positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction preparation. In this process, drug elements are withdrawn from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests the most intricate to execute.

Confirmations of positive results involve GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS analysis. All positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests uncover substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the brief detection time of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are difficult to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: Offers insight into the historical pattern of usage over time, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair shaft, not the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
