In Algona, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. When in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in cities across the country that can administer this test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is sufficient. Tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent in drug testing protocols. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often choose this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-use policies, courts, and individuals on probation favor hair tests due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and minimal risk of tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying the presence of drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair testing can uncover substance use up to an approximate 3-month period. The process of collecting hair samples is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It is recommended to measure the weight of the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair can be used. Head hair is defined exclusively as scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for obtaining drug test results consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's system. This phase includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and inputting any extra data not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial low-cost examination for drugs of abuse. Although effective at ruling out drug use in most cases, any positively screened samples require further confirmation to be valid for legal matters. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation step.

In instances of a presumptive positive from the Screening stage, an additional portion of hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are washed as part of the confirmation process when necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals historical usage: It provides a timeline of drug use over a significant period, rather than only recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly within 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
