In Almira, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations. If you're in need of a test for substances or alcohol, we specialize in these areas with centers across all cities in the U.S. For an accurate assessment, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either on the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing services.

Alternatives like hair follicle testing are gaining preference in recent years for drug screenings. Employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over conventional urine ones. Those with strict anti-drug policies, and legal probations use this method due to its 90-day detection period, observed collection, and high resistance to tampering. Yet, urine tests still dominate for recent use detection, covering the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective tool for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, providing a long-term record of substance use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, hard to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We recommend measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the sample was sealed and distributed correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to be accepted in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical patterns: It can show a trend of drug use over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Almira, WA, is superior due to its extended detection capabilities and reliability. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair tests cover a wider detection window, capturing drug use up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter timeframe. This gives employers and individuals an insightful and thorough look at substance use history.

Accuracy is another advantage that elevates hair testing over urine testing. The likelihood of tampering or evading detection is significantly reduced with hair tests, whereas urine tests remain susceptible to manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

In Almira, WA, hair follicle testing grants a detection window of up to 90 days, offering an in-depth view of an individual's substance history. This long-term detection is unmatched by other testing methods like urine tests, which only reveal recent usage. Employers benefit from a holistic insight into potential hires or current employees' drug use habits.

This extended capability is particularly beneficial for those enforcing drug-free workplace policies. By ensuring a comprehensive analysis, businesses can be more confident in their staffing decisions, knowing they have a full perspective of an individual’s past substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
