Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Anderson Island, Washington. Specializing in hair testing, our centers nationwide can conduct these tests whether you need them for drugs or alcohol. Hair from the crown of your head, or body if short, can be used typically at 1.5 to 2 inches in length. We offer testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. This method is sought after by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, often preferred over traditional urine tests. It's favored by those with strict anti-drug policies, the judicial system, and those on probation. The chief advantage is the extended detection time for drugs—up to 90 days—via an observed collection, making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drugs by trapping indicators within the strands as they grow. A sample taken close to the scalp can provide a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand composed of nearly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp offers 100mg, which is the ideal sample weight for screening and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (like facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The core steps in lab drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed within a lab's system, including verifying the proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any absent data entries not managed through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening constitutes a preliminary check for substance abuse. Though cost-effective, a positive Screen must be validated to stand in legal scenarios. Any samples showing preliminary positive results require secondary verification.

If a sample shows a probable positive in Screening, further hair is taken from the original batch for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result in screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, making outcomes more reliable.
  • Reveals usage history: It displays a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent usage detection: Drugs take 5-7 days to be detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," they actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Anderson Island, WA offers an insightful look into why hair testing surpasses urine testing. Hair follicle tests offer greater detection accuracy, outshining more conventional urine tests. The reliability of hair tests provides a superior solution where accuracy in identifying drug use is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
