In Badger, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require tests for drug or alcohol use, our centers Nationwide are equipped for hair sample collection. The standard requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, or in some cases, body hair can be used. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Currently, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly prevalent for assessing drug use. Employers, judicial bodies, and addiction professionals favor them over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs often opt for this method due to its longer detection window of up to 90 days, reliable collection process, and difficulty to falsify, although urine tests remain the most effective for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand’s fibers. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advised to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was secured and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial fast examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further verification.

Should a sample yield a tentative positive result in the Screening, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples are cleansed prior to validation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and governed by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which observe a limited detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug activity across a span, beyond mere recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: A time span of approximately 5-7 days is needed before drugs are noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
