Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening solutions in Bangor Base, Washington. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing. Our centers are located in every city across the country, ready to administer hair assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for unique testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as the preferred method for drug screening, surpassing the traditional urine test. Many employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse counselors now mandate hair drug tests. The longer detection span—up to 90 days—collected through observed sampling, makes it almost foolproof. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, hair offers a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug presence over nearly a 3-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For procedures involving EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. If hair from the scalp is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a lab drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial steps of integrating a sample into the lab’s records. This process verifies the secure sealing and correct shipment of the sample, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry required not included through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo Confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptively positive Screening results require additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a more challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptively positive undergo cleaning before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine testing, which offers a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to rig: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It can showcase a usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
