Accredited Drug Testing provides full hair follicle drug testing services in Bay Center, Washington. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair analysis and offer testing facilities throughout the United States. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body can be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, the courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are often opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine method. This test is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. One major advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, conducted through an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a repository, preserving biomarker evidence of alcohol and other drugs within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is required to obtain 100mg, the preferred amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. In the context of head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process consists of four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This phase confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that isn't addressed by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage performs a preliminary swift examination for substances of abuse. Screening effectively eliminates drug usage in most samples economically; however, positive screens must be verified for legal admissibility. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample be marked presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This is where drugs are extracted from hair at a far lesser concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology to undertake.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is processed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suggested to be positive are cleansed prior to final confirmation as warranted. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which possess a shorter detection scope.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: Capable of revealing drug use patterns over a duration, not solely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent activity: Detection in hair necessitates roughly 5-7 days post-drug usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
