Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bayview, Washington. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and offers locations across major cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body typically suffices. Hair samples can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom testing.

The popularity of utilizing hair follicle drug tests has increased significantly in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers. A major advantage is their extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days. Collected under supervision, they resist tampering but urine tests remain key for pinpointing recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates long-term evidence of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within its growing strand fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and certain drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and it is simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to verify the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug tests adheres to four primary procedures: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the sample's initial integration into a laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample’s secure packaging and transport, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary rapid review for drug presence. Though a cost-efficient mode to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive Screening requires confirmation as evidence in legal proceedings. Any samples identified as potentially positive during Screening necessitate further validation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluids), defining hair drug screening as the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo cleaning when required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can expose drug ingestion for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reflects historical usage: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent ingestion: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally pricier than other test methods.
  • Result disparities: Factors like hair color and individual's hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
