Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Beaux Arts Village, Washington. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is renowned for its expertise in hair testing, with centers located Nationwide to carry out the procedures. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer unique testing options.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test method has increasingly featured in drug testing procedures. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with stringent no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. These tests offer a longer detection capability, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting very recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analyses are increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timespan of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to ship.

Securing a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This process entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid assessment for drug usage. While Screening offers a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug presence in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates further confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening warrant a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. Every aspect of the laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenges to tamper: Manipulating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical usage insight: It can offer a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
