In Bethel, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is supported by a network of testing centers across the nation, capable of conducting these tests efficiently. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. This method can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.
Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common compared to traditional methods. It's increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests. This is particularly used by employers with zero-tolerance policies and for individuals on probation. The key advantage of this test is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it hard to manipulate. Still, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise alternative.

Hair testing is now recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, it offers up to an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.
A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. It entails ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting additional data entry that is not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening serves as an initial rapid check for abuse drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.
Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to execute.
Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.
