Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing in Big Bottom, Washington. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing and our wide network of testing centers throughout the country enable us to perform these tests efficiently. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances through various testing choices.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has grown increasingly popular for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation commonly use hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of these tests is their extended detection period, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days, is done under supervision, and is almost impossible to alter. Nonetheless, for detection of recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine testing remains the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are exclusively referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages, namely Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes checking that the sample was securely sealed and appropriately sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't cover.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples, confirming a positive screen is necessary for it to hold in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid); thus, hair drug testing is the most challenging to perform.

Confirming any positive Screening results is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The whole lab process ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is considerably difficult to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It offers a pattern of substance use over time, rather than just capturing recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days post-usage for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests typically come at a higher cost than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth disparities can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Big Bottom, WA, hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
