Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Bingen, Washington. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair assessments, with facilities in cities across the U.S. ready for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Tests can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine checks. Hair follicle tests cater to employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial mandates, and probation requirements, offering a longer drug use detection period of up to 90 days, a supervised collection process, and minimizing chances of deception. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by securing biomarkers within the structure of the emerging hair shaft. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When speaking of head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This includes confirming the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that test positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen results is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. Every part of the laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter time span.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair tests are difficult to cheat, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests generally cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
