In Boise, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our specialized centers are strategically located nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches, primarily from the crown or body, suffices for most analyses. These tests evaluate substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized options.

Recently, the preference for hair follicle drug testing has surged. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose it over traditional urine tests. Favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, courts, and probation requirements, hair tests offer up to 90 days of drug use detection. Moreover, they ensure an observed collection process, minimizing cheating chances. For recent drug use (within 5 days) detection, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a window of detection for alcohol and other drugs lasting up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and any tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Outline

The laboratory process of obtaining a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any supplemental data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court acceptance. Any samples with a presumed positive outcome in Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is marked as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In the Extraction phase, drugs are removed from hair concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex technique to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods are used to affirm any positive screening results. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole lab procedure is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which feature shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a consistent drug use pattern over a time span, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Drugs typically require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing is generally pricier compared to other drug testing alternatives.
  • Outcome variability: Factors like hair color and personal disparities in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When compared to traditional urine testing in Boise, WA, hair follicle testing stands out for its enhanced detection capabilities and credibility. It allows professionals to trace drug use over an extended period, offering a broader view of an individual's substance history. This extensive detection window, coupled with the reliability of results, makes it the preferred choice for stringent zero-tolerance environments.

The added benefit of accuracy reduces instances of false negatives or positives, thereby safeguarding employers and legal entities against potential issues. This comprehensive drug history profile helps in making well-informed decisions, ensuring compliance and safety without the common pitfalls associated with urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to detect drug use dating back up to 90 days in Boise, WA, hair follicle testing offers an expansive detection window. This extended period provides employers and legal authorities with a holistic view of an individual's substance use, surpassing the capabilities of shorter-term tests like those from urine samples. Such longevity in detection is instrumental for long-term assessments.

Employers can understand behavioral trends and make decisions that align with workplace policies and safety standards. The long-term view offered by these tests ensures a comprehensive analysis of substance use, making them indispensable for thorough assessments and compliance with drug-free work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing drastically reduces the risk of sample tampering, a common concern in traditional drug testing methods. In Boise, WA, this method ensures the integrity of samples, which are typically collected under direct observation, significantly minimizing chances of adulteration or substitution that are more prevalent in urine tests.

The natural growth and constant renewal of hair mean that attempts to alter or tamper with the sample are exceedingly difficult. This factor strengthens test credibility, offering trustworthy and accurate results for employers and legal professionals relying on such findings to enforce policies and uphold legal standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
