Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Bonney Lake, Washington. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such tests, with centers located in every city across the Nation ready to assist you. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests are versatile, catering to drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for screening. An increasing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists opt for hair tests over standard urine analyses. Hair tests are favored by those who enforce strict no-drug policies, including employers, courts, and probation cases. A key advantage is the longer detection window, capturing drug use for up to 90 days, in an observed procedure that's nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. When retrieved near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to three months for identifying substances like alcohol. The collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to gather 150mg of the sample. To ensure accuracy, weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale is recommended. If scalp hair is inadequate, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test processing in a lab involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample’s initial integration into the lab’s system. This step includes confirming the sample’s integrity during sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn’t provide.

Screening offers a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires further confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further processing in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), presenting unique challenges, making hair drug screening more complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of all presumptive positive samples occurs before confirmation. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests offer detection of drug usage up to 90 days post-consumption, whereas urine tests cover a shorter span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical pattern identification: The test provides insight into substance use patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: There is a lag of around 5-7 days before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than many other testing methods available.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations detected in hair samples.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
