In Boyds, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our centers nationwide, including those in every city, are equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

There has been an uptick in the preference for hair follicle drug tests as a method to screen for drugs. Many employers and legal professionals now favor this method over traditional urine tests. These tests support zero-tolerance drug policies due to their extended detection window, which can reflect drug use up to 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering with results. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests still remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term usage history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair samples offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Collection is easy, the potential for adulteration is limited, and the samples are simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, perfect for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, body hair in equivalent amounts may be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of initially integrating a sample into the lab system. This entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplementary data input not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate a confirmatory examination.

For cases with a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at notably lower levels than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

A positive screening is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a more limited detection window.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Reveals usage trends: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become traceable in hair after 5-7 days from initial use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
