Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bryn Mawr, Washington. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with locations across the nation available to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is required, although body hair can be used. Hair assays can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

In recent times, the hair follicle test has become a more prevalent option for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by those enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation bodies. One major advantage of hair tests is their extended drug detection period, typically reaching 90 days, conducted in a supervised manner making them nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection range of up to approximately 90 days for substances like alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug testing workflow comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This stage involves confirming the sample's seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any manual data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug usage in many cases, a confirmed result is necessary for legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

The Confirmation phase for any positive results from Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards for Hair and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating in a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over a span, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the assessment is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
