Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Canyon Creek, Washington. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments and boasts testing centers across all major cities nationwide that conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific requirements.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly incorporated the hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine assessments. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation use these tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, monitored during collection, making it highly secure. Nevertheless, for detecting substance use in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When gathered at the scalp's base, hair can reveal a detection span of up to three months for intoxicants. The collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands of hair (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp yields around 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, supplementary analysis, or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg portion is advised. Usage of a jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportional amount of body hair can be acquired. 'Head hair' pertains solely to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test is divided into four stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's procedures. It includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data recording not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a preliminary inspection for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to negate drug intake for most samples, positive findings require confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples that yield a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample flags presumptive-positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the primary sample is prepared for Extraction. During this step, substances are extracted from the hair at more diluted concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), rendering hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo cleansing before confirmation where necessary. The entire laboratory process spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in alignment with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can unveil drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to counterfeit a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Yields historical usage data: It can demonstrate a pattern of substance use over an extended duration, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for a drug to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests commonly incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually evaluates the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
