Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Carnation, Washington. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol drug test, we are hair testing experts, with testing centers in all cities across the nation ready to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are opted by those with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection period for drug use, generally up to 90 days, with nearly impossible chances of cheating. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair can provide a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is taken near the scalp, it can offer an approximately 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioned, head hair refers only to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening executes a preliminary swift examination for abuse drugs. Although Screening is a cost-effective measure to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result needs validation for court acceptance. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this process, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screenings one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the oversight of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It supplies a drug use pattern over a period, rather than just detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A period of around 5-7 days is required before substances are detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Carnation, WA, individuals and companies recognize that hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing. While traditional urine tests provide a snapshot, hair tests offer a broader detection window, ensuring comprehensive oversight. Hair testing enhances accuracy and reliability unmatched by urine testing's limitations.

The impossibility of altering hair test results elevates its trustworthiness compared to urine tests prone to manipulation. Therefore, hair follicle testing stands as a robust choice for honest, long-term substance use insights, ensuring a drug-free workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Carnation, WA, opt for hair follicle testing to gain a wider extended detection window for drugs. Unlike other tests, hair evaluations reveal substance use up to 90 days prior, offering a fuller view of an individual's history. This comprehensive detection window is invaluable.

With potential drug use detectable over such a prolonged period, employers can make informed hiring and retention decisions. This certainty provides peace of mind in maintaining substance-free environments, promoting safety and compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Carnation, WA reduces risks of sample adulteration greatly. Compared to other methods, hair samples are resistant to contamination and tampering, ensuring reliable and unquestionable results each time.

Such integrity in the testing process assures employers and judicial systems alike that the results are a true reflection of the candidate's or employee's history. This advantage instills reliability and maintains the credibility of drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
