At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Cedar Falls, Washington. If you're seeking a hair-related drug or alcohol test, our centers specialize in such tests and are spread nationwide, ready to assist. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol (ETG), or other custom testing solutions.

Recently, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has surged. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts widely prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are ideal for organizations with strict drug policies, legal institutions, or those on probation. Their primary advantage is a significantly longer detection timeframe for substance use—up to 90 days—collected with oversight, reducing cheating chances. Still, urine tests maximize accuracy for drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use spanning approximately 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (comparable in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is usable. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. In contrast, body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the first stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process encompasses ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although cost-effective, Screening can determine drug presence for most samples but requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptive positives during the Screening stage, more hair is drawn from the original sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Any screening result suspected of being positive is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests exhibit a shorter detection period.
  • Low likelihood of manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, contributing to the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers consumption history: This method can display a trend of drug usage over a stretch of time, not limited to recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
