Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Centerville, Washington. For those requiring hair or alcohol testing, our centers, located nationwide, are equipped to provide these services. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp or body for testing. Hair analysis can be conducted for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific preferences.

Lately, the preference for drug testing has leaned towards hair follicle testing. It’s favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine testing. Hair tests cater to employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary bodies, and individuals on probation. Notably, hair testing boasts a longer detection timeline, approximately 90 days, is done under supervision, and is challenging to manipulate. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarker information within its strands, offering a historical account of substance use. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal substance usage for up to 90 days. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for consistent analysis. For extended tests including EtG or panels over 10, 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair; "body hair" represents all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase where the sample is entered into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample’s integrity by checking its seal and delivery, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening involves a preliminary and quick assessment for drugs of abuse. While being a budget-friendly approach to filter out drug consumption for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed as evidence. Samples with positive Screening results necessitate an additional confirmation.

For presumptively positive samples in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other mediums (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples flagged as presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Minimized cheating chances: Hair drug testing is challenging to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reports historical use: It reflects a usage pattern over time, unlike showing merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs need about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing often costs more than other drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", this test scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
