Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Central Valley, Washington. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, offering locations across the country capable of conducting hair tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body for testing. Hair tests accommodate analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and those on probation find hair follicle tests invaluable. These tests offer a detection window of up to 90 days, ensure observed sample collection, and are difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Such testing offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair samples can demonstrate a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 strands of hair (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is beneficial to gauge the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This stage ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not supplied via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes substance use in most cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for admissibility in legal settings. Samples that are seemingly positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Samples with a presumptive positive outcome during the Screening are further processed by retrieving additional hair from the original specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging test to conduct.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation when necessary. The laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes supervision under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and alignment with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals drug use patterns over an extended timeframe, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative drug-testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite common references as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing in Central Valley, WA, are significant. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
