Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Cherry Grove, Washington. If you're in need of drug or alcohol hair testing, our expertise lies in this area, with testing facilities in every city across the nation. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches at the crown or elsewhere on the body is required. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard method for drug assessments. A wide range of employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method is particularly favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, probation systems, and courts. The major advantage of hair testing is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, which is collected in a controlled process, minimizing the chance of tampering. For detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests still prove to be the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by storing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides about 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent mass of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically reference scalp hair, whereas body hair pertains to other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This involves confirming the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody chain.

Screening consists of an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be acceptable in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is extremely hard to cheat a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
