Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chico, Washington. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol test you require, our expertise in hair testing spans across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body are necessary. Hair tests can effectively detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer these over traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation departments opt for hair tests due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, conducted under strict supervision, making deception almost impossible. However, for detecting recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unrivaled.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains markers in its strands, offering a historical overview of substance use. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipment.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a specimen within the lab's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective and effective for most samples, a positive result here needs further confirmation to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives during Screening require subsequent validation.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This extraction identifies drugs at significantly lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation is performed on positive screening results using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation washing occurs if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and conforms to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can trace drug use back 90 days.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are tough to deceive, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insights: Provides data on drug usage patterns over time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs take about 5-7 days to show up in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can fluctuate due to hair color and individual growth differences.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," they actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has clear advantages over traditional urine tests in Chico, WA. It offers superior detection accuracy, with drug use identifiable over a much longer timeframe.
The reliability of hair tests ensures that any attempt to mislead the results is highly unlikely, providing confidence in the test outcomes that cannot be matched by urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
