Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Coalfield, Washington. Whether a hair or alcohol analysis is required, our expertise in hair assessments is nationwide with centers across cities to facilitate these tests. Generally needing 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair, evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug evaluations have gained popularity as an alternative to usual urine tests. Businesses, legal institutions, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests. For zero-tolerance policies, probation, or legal purposes, the main advantage is its 90-day detection scope, necessitating observed collection and reducing cheating potential. However, for recent consumption, within 5 days, urine evaluations remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol use. It offers a comprehensive history of substance consumption by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. Collected near the scalp, it can indicate alcohol and drug presence for up to approximately 90 days. The collection process is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and it is easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For additional analyses, such as EtG, or tests with more than 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. It is recommended to measure the sample weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving the integration of the sample into the lab's system. This phase includes ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, generating a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening involves a preliminary check for substances. It serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, but any positive finding during Screening must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples showing initial positive results require further Confirmation.

A positive Screening result leads to additional hair extraction from the specimen for further Examination. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral samples, making hair drug testing a complex method.

Confirmation for any positive result during Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before Confirmation, all samples with preliminary positive results are cleaned as required. This entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Cheating is difficult: Being unable to easily manipulate the results ensures greater accuracy.
  • Can indicate past patterns of drug use: It shows a historical timeline of substance use, beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug testing is more expensive compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Attributes such as hair pigmentation and individual growth differences can influence the presence of drug metabolites.

Note: The commonly referred to "hair follicle tests" actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
