In Concrete, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're in need of a test for drugs or alcohol, we are experts in hair analysis, offering facilities across the country. You typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over the usual urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and probation individuals prefer this test because of its extended detection window, up to 90 days, and its monitored collection process. Despite this, for recent substance use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structure of hair captures biomarkers from alcohol and drugs within the strand as it grows, offering a long-term use history. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a time frame of roughly three months. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

To acquire 100mg of hair, the favored amount for analysis, a 1.5-inch section comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) right next to the scalp is optimal. For assessments involving EtG, additional elements, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is recommended to measure the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug testing encompasses four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the beginning of a sample's integration into a laboratory's framework. This process involves examining whether the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing details not recorded by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse traces. While it offers a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening are subject to further confirmation.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is set aside for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate procedures.

Verification for any positive Screening outcomes is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives undergo a cleansing process before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • High accuracy: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Chronicles drug usage: It reflects a pattern of drug use over time rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
