In Covington, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our centers specialize in hair testing and are accessible in every city nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug test protocols. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are vital for employers with strict no-drug policies, court-ordered checks, and probationers. The advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection minimizing tampering. For recent drug use detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive history of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch hair sample from about 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to assess the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test outcome encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial phase of transferring a sample into the laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data not already provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for illicit substances. This cost-effective approach helps eliminate drug use in most samples, though a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that are presumptively positive in the Screening phase necessitate further confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging technique.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for confirming any positive Screening results. Presumptive positive specimens are cleansed prior to their confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty in altering a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Chronological usage data: It can chart a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of detection for recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Variations in results can occur due to differing hair colors and individual growth rates influencing drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
