Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Darrington, Washington. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in hair assessments is unmatched, with facilities available nationwide, including all major cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your head or body can suffice. Hair checks can screen for various substances, alcohol/ETG, and more advanced options.

Recently, testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle analysis over traditional approaches. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair over urine samples for drug checks. This test caters to zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial cases, and probationary scenarios due to its extensive detection range, which can cover up to 90 days. Collected under observation, it's nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, for evaluating recent drug activities (within 5 days), urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, it can reveal substance use for a period of up to nearly 3 months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A strand sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional elements, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring it’s been secured and transported appropriately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug presence in most specimens, a positive Screening result requires additional confirmation to be viable in legal environments. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

Upon a presumptive positive result in Screening, an additional hair sample is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, substances are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug screening being the most intricate methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens are cleaned prior to the confirmation as needed. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to the shorter detection period for urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is exceedingly difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can present a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Darrington, WA

Hair testing stands out against traditional urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests are limited to recent drug consumption, hair tests provide a detailed overview of drug use patterns over an extended period. Hair analysis is less prone to manipulation, making it a preferred choice for those looking for definitive results.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Darrington, WA

Hair follicle tests can track drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days. This longer detection window allows employers to gain a comprehensive perspective on an employee's or applicant's drug history, offering significant insight into their past behavior. This feature sets hair testing apart from other methods providing timely and actionable information.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Darrington, WA

The hair follicle testing process is inherently resistant to tampering, making it a reliable choice. Unlike urine samples, which may be adulterated or substituted, hair samples offer a high level of assurance regarding authenticity. This tamper-proof nature ensures that results are trustworthy and accountable, crucial for maintaining the integrity of drug testing systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
