In Deep River, Washington, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is provided by Accredited Drug Testing. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we offer services at centers across numerous cities Nationwide. A hair test typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other purposes.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing methods. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, these tests often replace standard urine tests. They're chosen for their significant advantages, including longer detection periods of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as an influential method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair’s fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a span of roughly three months. It is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equals 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent measure of body hair may be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning manages the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s database. This step confirms the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any other necessary data entry not captured by an electronic custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drug presence. While this is a financially smart technique for negating drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be court-accepted. Samples that appear positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm positive screenings. All samples indicating presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It documents a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variance can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Deep River, WA, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests with superior detection capabilities. Employers benefit from the longer detection window and greater accuracy, which urine tests cannot match.

While urine tests are effective for recent drug use, hair testing provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use over time, serving as a reliable alternative for enforcing workplace policies.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Deep River, WA, can leverage hair follicle tests for extended detection periods of drug use, up to 90 days. This long window offers a thorough assessment of an individual’s substance history.

This expanded detection range is particularly beneficial for employers aiming to maintain a drug-free environment with a historical lens on substance use, beyond the immediate past covered by urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
