Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Dungeness, Washington. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we're experts in hair testing with centers nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head is necessary, though body hair can suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

The trend of drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle methods in recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation entities often use hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and high resistance to tampering, unlike urine tests that remain superior for drugs used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the head, hair can offer almost a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the head yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments over 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is given. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When talking about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases involved in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s framework. This entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any samples speculatively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is speculatively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the hardest method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All speculatively positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which possess a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is tough, hence making the results more precise.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
