Accredited Drug Testing in Duvall, Washington offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services. Specializing in hair tests, we have nationwide centers equipped for this procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. Hair can be screened for substances like drugs or alcohol, with customizable test options available.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become more popular in drug screening processes. This test is frequently requested by employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts, preferring it over urine tests. Entities with strict drug policies, like employers and courts, often choose hair tests due to their 90-day detection capability, providing a nearly tamper-proof method. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a repository of long-term consumption data by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, an optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair is permissible. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for abused drugs. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show a possibly positive result in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample demonstrate a presumptively positive response during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than seen in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a trend in drug use over time, beyond immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing options.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
