Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in East Cathlamet, Washington. For those requiring a test for drugs or alcohol via hair sampling, we offer specialized services, with facilities available in every city nationwide. The test generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These analyses can screen for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair analysis over conventional urine testing. This approach is adopted by those with strict drug-free policies, as well as judicial bodies and those on probation. A key advantage lies in its extended drug detection capability—up to 90 days—ensured by supervised collection and resistant to tampering. That said, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. With hair, one can trace a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, the hair sample can offer an alcohol and drug detection timeframe of up to roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil), will yield about 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG assessments, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, a measurement of 150mg is advisable. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable mass of body hair can be taken. Note that when we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair, such as facial or axillary hair.

Procedure Summary

The drug testing process in the lab consists of four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s database, which involves ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any additional data recording not supported by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for drugs. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly means to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Any sample that yields a presumptive positive in Screening requires further validation.

In case a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are removed from hair but in lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis one of the most challenging techniques to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a cleansing before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a trend of substance use over time, not only recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs usually become apparent in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests, particularly in East Cathlamet, WA. Its ability to detect substance use over a prolonged period offers a significant advantage. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
