Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Seattle, Washington. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing specialist, with testing facilities available in various cities nationwide to perform hair tests efficiently. Typically, you need around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing. Hair tests are suitable for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many workplaces, legal courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation-affiliated individuals. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, ensuring a nearly tamper-proof collection process. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. It offers an extended history by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of hair. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal a usage history of up to around three months. Hair sampling is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (parallel in size to a #2 pencil), provides about 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. For precision, the use of a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair isn’t available, an identical volume of body hair is an acceptable alternative. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in processing a drug test in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the lab’s system. The process entails verifying that the sample’s sealing and shipment were correct, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any necessary data entry that isn't digitally handled through a custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary drug detection. Though Screening is an effective means to identify the absence of drug usage in most samples, any screen yielding positive must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples yielding questionable results require additional verification.

If a sample is deemed presumptive-positive at Screening, further hair is extracted from the original sample for use in Extraction. This phase separates drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to urine or saliva tests, making hair screening intricate.

Confirmation of positive screenings is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any sample with a presumptive positive reading gets cleansed before confirmation. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP Hair designation and accreditation per ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Up to 90 days for detecting drug use, as opposed to urine tests which detect use over a shorter period.
  • Hard to deceive: The accuracy of hair drug tests is increased by their resilience to tampering.
  • Historical insights: Can determine drug use patterns over time rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", this term is a misnomer as the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing excels over urine tests in East Seattle, WA, offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests highlight recent usage, hair tests reflect longer-term patterns of substance use. This advanced method reduces the likelihood of false results and provides a more comprehensive and trustworthy assessment for employers and legal entities.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
