Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle drug analysis in Elbe, Washington. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair sampling, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, and we have facilities in numerous cities Nationwide ready to conduct hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is required. This test identifies drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offers custom testing options.

Over the last few years, drug testing methods increasingly integrate hair follicle analysis. Many employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle testing is utilized by companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage lies in its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, observed collection process, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests still provide the greatest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by keeping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand of hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, extra panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test processing consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial stage of processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data input not available from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a quick preliminary test for substances of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs verification for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample records a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction preparation. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most sophisticated methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that show presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a short detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are extremely hard to alter, resulting in more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical data: It can outline a history of drug use over time rather than detecting just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day period before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Variable outcomes: Different factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Elbe, WA, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior method compared to traditional urine testing due to its enhanced detection capabilities. Unlike urine tests that detect recent drug use, hair tests provide insights into patterns over a longer period, up to 90 days. This makes it especially useful for employers and legal professionals concerned with ongoing substance abuse, thus ensuring a more reliable assessment.

Hair follicle tests not only cover a broader detection window but are also less susceptible to result manipulation compared to urine tests. The observed nature of collection in hair testing significantly reduces the chances of adulteration, providing employers and authorities with a trusted method unmatched in precision and integrity, making it preferable in a wide range of scenarios.

Extended Detection Window

In Elbe, WA, hair follicle testing conveys a longer detection window, monitoring substance use up to 90 days. This feature offers employers invaluable insights into an applicant’s or employee’s substance habits beyond recent activity. With such an extended period, this method fortifies drug-free workplace initiatives, helping organizations maintain safety standards by being well-informed about individuals’ drug histories.

The compelling timeframe offered through hair tests grants businesses, legal entities, and other institutions the ability to trace substance use back months. This extended insight is crucial for understanding whether employees or potential hires maintain long-term compliance with company policies on drug use, offering a comprehensive view that ensures informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Elbe, WA significantly curtails the possibility of test result tampering. Since samples are collected under observation, the likelihood of alteration is minimal, offering unquestionable reliability. Such resistance to sample interference ensures that results obtained reflect true substance use, giving peace of mind to employers and legal bodies relying on accurate data for critical decisions.

The hair follicle test’s inherent design to prevent tampering distinguishes it from other methodologies. As manipulation of test results is challenging with this method, those relying on the data obtained can trust in its authenticity and accuracy. This leads to better compliance, consistent policy enforcement, and ultimately, a safer and more accountable environment for all stakeholders involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
