Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Esperance, Washington. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair test methods, with facilities available in cities across the nation capable of conducting such assessments. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown of the head or body is typically necessary. Hair testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing techniques are increasingly favoring hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often necessitate these over traditional urine exams. Employers enforcing no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary individuals find hair follicle tests advantageous. They offer extended drug detection periods—up to 90 days—are collected under supervision, and are nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting recent use within five days, urine tests remain accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can provide a detection span of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is optimal. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases included in processing a drug test result within a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase involves the initial steps of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any additional data entry that was not previously provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for it to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary prior to confirmation. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are hard to deceive, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It provides insights into drug use patterns over a duration of time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the quantity of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
