Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Fife Heights, Washington. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing provides convenience nationwide, including all cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly common in drug test protocols. It's preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation favor this method. The key advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, making it hard to bypass, though urine tests are still preferred for recent usage, within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is increasingly recognized as a highly effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term recorder of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the hair's growing strands. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield approximately 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" pertains solely to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The main phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial process of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug use. Although it is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be considered court-admissible. Any specimens yielding a presumptive positive result must undergo further verification.

During the Extraction stage, if a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for further preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive specimens are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to outwit: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical usage data: It demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually costlier compared to other drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Fife Heights, WA stands superior to traditional urine tests for several reasons. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
