Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle testing in Finley, Washington. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and boasts testing facilities in every city across the United States capable of conducting these tests. Typically, a 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from the scalp or body is required. Hair analysis accommodates drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing modalities.

Over the past years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly replaced traditional methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often demand hair drug tests over the usual urine assessments. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation officers favor hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window, which lasts up to 90 days, under supervised conditions, and its robustness against tampering. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past five days, urine testing remains the benchmark for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an influential means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substance use by encasing biomarkers in the strands of hair as they grow. When retrieved near the scalp, hair may reveal up to a three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hairs (a size akin to a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the prime sample for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out additional data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid review for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that preliminarily yield a positive result in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample preliminarily indicates positivity during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest method to execute.

The affirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. The whole lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection: Hair drug screenings can identify drug utilization up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a restricted detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Evading a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Reflects historical usage: It showcases a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot show recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
