In Freeman, Washington, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you need to test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis with centers across the nation ready for testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary for sampling in most situations. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has increased in recent years, often replacing traditional urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Hair drug testing is favored by organizations with strict drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation due to its prolonged detection capability of up to 90 days. This process is conducted under observation and is challenging to cheat, although urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended-term overview of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sourced near the scalp, hair can give up to roughly a 3-month time frame for identifying alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the perfect sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. In context to head hair, we reference scalp hair alone. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary handling of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data input not facilitated by an electronic custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it is an economical means to rule out drug use across most samples, a positive outcome needs to be verified for court acceptance. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening do require further validation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a more complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly hard, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical analysis: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over a duration, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Freeman, WA, offers superior advantages over traditional urine tests. Longer detection window: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, far exceeding the typical few days for urine. Reliability: With less opportunity for tampering, hair tests provide a more secure sampling process. Overcoming limitations of urine testing, hair analyses give a more complete view of substance use.

While urine tests are best for recent drug detection, hair testing offers a comprehensive record of use over a longer period. This makes it ideal for companies enforcing strict zero-tolerance policies. Thus, when accuracy and extended observation are crucial, hair testing emerges as the superior choice.

Extended Detection Window

In Freeman, WA, hair follicle testing offers an extensive detection window, capturing substance use history over a 90-day period. Employers and agencies benefit from this comprehensive overview of an individual's drug use, providing vital data that supports better decision-making in the workplace.

With an extended detection period, hair testing outperforms other methods by showing a clearer image of an individual's substance history. This detailed insight aids in assessing long-term behavior rather than focusing on recent activity, thus offering an invaluable resource for background checks and evaluations in drug-free initiatives.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Freeman, WA, is a tamper-resistant method, significantly lowering the risk of sample adulteration. Its integrity and reliability make it a preferred choice for those seeking trustworthy results. Because of the way samples are collected and analyzed, hair tests provide a robust defense against dishonesty.

Due to the observed collection process, hair samples are less vulnerable to manipulation compared to other methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
