Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Georgetown, Washington. For individuals needing a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing and provide testing centers across all U.S. cities that conduct hair evaluations. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally required. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained favor as a method for drug screening. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair strands offer an extensive history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is perfect for screening and validation. For tests like EtG, additions, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of hair. It is advised to measure the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of integrating a sample into a lab’s system. This phase ensures that the sample is securely sealed and shipped, a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any missing data entry from an electronic chain of custody system is completed.

Screening conducts a swift initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening effectively eliminates drug usage in most samples due to its cost efficiency, court-admissible screens providing positive results require subsequent confirmation. For Screening samples that are presumptively positive, additional confirmation is mandatory.

A sample showing presumptively positive in Screening will have more hair extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. Drugs are removed from hair during this stage at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques confirm any positive screening outcome. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are rinsed as necessary. The whole lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can trace drug consumption for as long as 90 days, outlasting urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenges in tampering: Cheating a hair drug test proves extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage patterns: It offers insights into drug usage behavior over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent detection: Drugs generally take 5-7 days before becoming apparent in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests typically incur more costs than alternative testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", such tests actually examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
